The Increasing Competition for College Admissions

Article by Steve Shankar

Once the school life is over, there is an anticipation of joining college to enjoy life with liberty. However, college admissions can be quite maddening as you have to select the right college, the best course and meet the cut-off percentage accordingly. A perfect score is not always the criteria to get admission in a reputed college. Many colleges conduct admission tests to short list the creditable candidates.

All institutes have their own selection process for admissions to the different courses. The foremost step is to get the admission forms along with the prospectus of the preferred colleges and submit them in time. Some special quotas are also available for different categories of candidates. Though, many people oppose this reservation criterion, yet it provides a chance to many prospective students which they would have generally unable to pursue.

Students from various streams need to prepare well in advance for getting university admissions in their preferable course. A student aspiring for a degree in medicine, have to appear for a medical entrance test whereas the students who want to pursue engineering, have to qualify a common engineering entrance exam. In some cases, two main perspectives may be considered for admissions. First is the merit perspective which relies on the academic and non-academic achievements of the candidates. The second is the competition perspective that emphasizes on the characteristics of student according to the organizational requirements. There are many important features of the college that need to be considered like college ranking and the quality of the course you are opting for. The facilities like library, laboratories and placement cells must be up to the mark. Last but not the least, the college tuition and other expenses should be within your affordability.

College is the place which shapes your career by helping you in achieving your goals. The increasing competition for admission to a more preferred college might have actual benefits if it were to enhance learning amongst the high school students. Moreover, the increasing resources, employed by the parents and students to improve their odds of admissions at good colleges usually put the candidates belonging to low-income group at a disadvantage.
The “Practical” Meaning Of College Success

Article by Bob Roth, The “College & Career Success” Coach

The “Practical” Meaning Of College Success

by Bob RothThe “College & Career Success” Coach

With the cost of a college education at an all-time high, most students will graduate from college with a huge debt. Additionally, new graduates frequently increase that burden by purchasing a car, leasing an apartment and adding to their credit card debt. It’s no wonder that these young adults can feel like they are drowning in bills, payments and obligations. This is especially true when their first job does not pay enough to support their needs and obligations.

College students today must begin to look at “college success” from a more realistic and practical perspective. For most students, simply obtaining a college education is no longer enough. College success now means that a student has been able to launch his/her career by obtaining a great job, at a good salary, with an employer that holds out a future for them. This combination can bode well for their social, psychological and economic future.

Of course, there are now and will always be students who say that they place little value on economic security and success. That’s fine, as long as they understand, accept and can deal with the challenges that go along with a severely limited income. Coming out of college with $ 10,000, $ 20,000, $ 30,000 or more in college loans and then accepting a job that pays around $ 10 an hour just won’t reconcile very well.

Most parents are very much in tune with this stark reality. They are well aware that education loans, living expenses, car payments and credit card debt will have a significant impact on the lives of their children. Hopefully, more students will come to recognize this “practical reality” and will understand and accept this fact early in their college experience. Early recognition will give them time to actively improve their chances for finding and sustaining a career that will offer financial success. However, late recognition will most certainly get them started off on the wrong foot.

Without an adequate income, young adults may be stuck in an impossible battle. Which bills will they pay this month and which ones will they let slide? They will find it difficult or impossible to get credit. If they lose their job, they will have no savings to fall back on. If they become sick or get injured, they will have no medical insurance. Few people can build for the future (a family, a home) without adequate income and savings. And what about retirement? Young adults who are unable to save for retirement will never be able to retire.

Yes, an excess of money, can be the source of much evil. However, on the other end of the spectrum, a serious lack of money is called poverty. Young adults, who have obtained a college degree, should not be living in poverty and should not be forever dependent on their parents for support. Since few students want to live in poverty, the most aggressive students establish a plan and work hard to accomplish the steps that will help to ensure a reasonable degree of financial success and independence.

As Dr. Phil likes to say, “When you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences.” It’s this simple! What students do while they are in college will determine how much interest they will draw from employers with the good paying jobs.

Since nobody owes them a living, college students who would like to obtain something more than a dead end job will choose to compete for, even fight and scratch for, the knowledge, skills, experiences and accomplishments that can hold out a more financially secure future.

To compete effectively, students with higher ambitions design their college, community and employment experiences around the needs and expectations of the best employers. These students understand that they must give employers what they want. Students who choose not to prepare in this way will never even get into the game.

The college experience is an opportunity to learn, grow, mature and prepare for the future. Because they recognize that success is a choice, savvy students make the most of their time in college. Financial security or financial distress, which will you choose?

Government grants as an option of debt relief is not very popular. This is basically due to the lack of awareness amongst the people. Every year billions of dollars are kept aside for the purpose of giving away as government grants. People do not opt for these grants for debt relief because they think that either these grants are not available to individuals or they are not eligible to apply for the same.

Why Government Gives Grants For Debt Relief

When people are debt ridden, their expenditure decreases. This reduces the demand for various things in the economy because people will not have money to spend. Slowly this affects all areas of the economy, with the result that the economy of the state / nation suffers. Therefore it is imperative that the people have enough spending capacity so that the economy prospers.

Debt Relief With Government Grants

Government grants are more easily available than other forms of loans. This is because grants unlike loans do not require collateral or any other form of security. These thousands of dollars got as grants can be used for starting a new business, the proceeds from which can be used to clear off previous debts.

Grants are also available for clearing off debts incurred due to specific reasons like health care, education, business expenses etc. For e.g. a debt incurred for health care purposes like hospitalisation, medical bills, etc. can be cleared with the help of government grants. Debts incurred for setting up a business can also be funded using government grants. This makes government grant an ideal debt relief instrument.

Are grants easily available?

Grants are easily available to those people who can prove to the government that they are not in a position to pay off their debts. The social service office elaborately studies the financial position, outstanding debts and repayment capability of the debtor before issuing the grant. This is to ensure that the grant is going to the extremely needy people who have no other means to salvage their debt ridden situation.

Advantages Of Availing Government Grants For Debt Relief

1.	A grant is easily available because no collateral is required to be got for it. The debtor just has to prove that he is not in a position to pay off his debts.

2.	A grant is an aid from the government. It is not a loan. Hence it need not be paid back. It is both interest-free and non-taxable. It is given with the sole purpose of getting the finances of the debtor back on track, thereby making him debt-free subsequently.

3.	With the availability of government grants for debt relief the debtors are saved from declaring bankruptcy.

4.	Grants in comparison with other form of debt relief are a better option because they make the debtor debt free instantly.

Government grants are therefore an ideal debt relief option for those debtors who have no other option but to declare bankruptcy.

Affording college is easy, if you go about paying for it in the right manner.

One of the main issues that most people have in sending their kids to college is the high costs that are associated with a college education nowadays. This can easily be fixed, however. All you have to know is where you can get money for college students, and how to go about it in the right manner.

To find money to pay for college, the first thing you should do is fill out a FAFSA form, which will allow the government to offer you lots of money in financial aid. After sending in the FAFSA and qualifying for financial aid, you will receive offers from the government for scholarships, grants, student loans, work-study, and even more! All you have to do is fill out the simple form.

After completing the FAFSA and receiving financial aid from the government, you should next apply for scholarships on your own to get even more money for college. Apply to at least 30 and it will still pay off. Even if you win one for $1,000, that still equates to $20 to $30 per hour.

To get more money to pay for college, have your child take on a part time job during school and also have them participate in paid internships every summer. By doing this, your child will have another $10,000 to $20,000 to pay for college. By now you could have up to $30,000 to cover college costs, which will be enough unless you are going to a private college.

In that case, your next step will be to take out student loans. I would advise looking into the Perkins and Stafford Loans first, as these are the best student loan options that are available.

Once you have gotten student loans, you can look into other resources for financial aid, such as being sponsored for good grades. If you still need money to pay for college, at this point you can dip into your financial savings.
